FACTS
The Grizzly bear, Golden or Brown Bear is California's official state animal and appears on the state Flag.  Look at this ingenious grizzly bear art work above, created from vintage maps by Jason LaFerrera.  Unfortunately, the Grizzly Bear is extinct.  Sadly, the last one was shot by a hunter in 1922.  Black bears still roam the mountainous regions of California.  By 1923, oil discoveries helped California become the country's largest oil producer, accounting for about one-quarter of the world's petroleum output.
