FACTS / Guatemala's abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems contributes to Mesoamerica's designation as a biodiversity hotspot.  It contains at least 1500 species under threat by humans and the loss of at least 70% of it's vegetation.  There are only 25 areas in the world with this type of biological threat.  It is a target for hurricanes and earthquakes, being on the Motagua Fault (between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean).
