HISTORY / South Africa contains some of the oldest archaeological and human fossil sites in the world. Extensive prehistoric fossil remains have been recovered from a series of caves in an area made an UNESCO World Heritage site, termed the Cradle of Humankind. The sites includes one of the richest hominin fossil sites in the world. The first hominin fossil discovered in Africa, the Taung Child was found near Taung in 1924. These sites suggest various hominid species existed in South Africa three million years ago, later succeeded by Homo sapiens.
